Farm-Homestead Exemption

Seven Springs Farm prepares its Italian Pantry foods under Indiana’s small-farm and homestead food law (IC 16-42-5.3), enacted specifically to help agriculture-based businesses sell their products directly to consumers without being overwhelmed by licensing fees, routine inspections, and other costly requirements designed primarily for large commercial food manufacturers. Our Italian Pantry products are prepared and packaged here on our farm and sold directly to our customers at the farm, at Indiana farmers markets, and via on-line sales and delivery within Indiana.

Importantly, this law does not exempt us from food safety. We remain responsible for preparing every product correctly, maintaining sanitary facilities and equipment, preventing contamination, controlling acidity, temperature, and processing conditions as appropriate, labeling ingredients and allergens accurately, and handling and transporting our foods safely. The law removes thousands of dollars in burdensome administrative red tape; it does not remove our responsibility to produce safe, wholesome food—and that is a responsibility we both welcome and take very seriously.
